The Visconti Divina Desert Spring fountain pen is the latest in a range of pens produced by Visconti according to the 'golden number', or 'Divine ratio' (hence Divina) that has been known by mathematicians for many years (about 2,500, if truth be told) to be one that makes things look and feel "right" if the dimensions are arranged accordingly - successful architects have used this ratio to make rooms that feel "right", and now Visconti's pen designers have now adopted this ratio in the production of their luxury pens. The Divine Ratio is 1:1.618, and Visconti have designed the lengths of this pen so that the cap-to-pen-barrel ratio is indeed 1:1.618.

The Desert Spring is made of a mixture of sandy-coloured celluloid that is shot through with rivulets of dark- and light-blue lacquer that bring to mind streams of water returning to an arid land. Note that the process of moulding and polishing this pen mean that the pattern thus produced is unique - no two of these pens will be exactly alike.

Earlier versions of the Divina had metallic threads shaped down the length of the cap and the pen body in five spirals that also were governed by the golden number. Because of the beautiful patterning of the colours in the Desert Spring version, Visconti have abandoned the metal decoration - it surely would have been too fussy, and detracted from the base colours of the pen - though the spirals are still subtly evident in the celluloid body.

The Desert Spring fountain pen has Visconti's 'push-and-twist' bayonet locking system to keep the cap secure whilst the pen is closed, and of course has the unique Ponte Vecchio arched clip that is so characteristic of a pen that is made in Italy.

This Visconti Divina Desert Spring has a 23kt Palladium 'Dreamtouch' Nib
